Playing Favorites

When it feels like something is “off” inside you, there’s nothing better than embracing yourself with your favorite things. I wish I could claim this is an original idea, but I owe the original inspiration to an experience I had at age three.

My mother was in labor, delivering my sister into this wacky world, and my father took me to the movies. The first film I ever saw on the big screen was “The Sound of Music.” Thanks to my sister being born, this movie has been a gift to my subconscious mind for thirty-seven years, and all the years still to come.

Today, I know the depiction of the von Trapp family in the movie is quite a bit different than their reality. Still, the movie really stirred something deep within me.

Oscar Hammerstein’s musical song lyrics created a memorable soundtrack. And even if you’re not a huge fan of the play or of the movie, you can’t help but know the song, “My Favorite Things.” I absolutely loved singing along to this song as a child, and maybe just two lines of the entire tune galvanize the importance of having favorite things, not from a materialistic perspective, but from one of self-actualization:

“I simply remember my favorite things / And then I don’t feel so bad”

Many self-help gurus have emphasized the need to create a gratitude journal so we all have a space to express what we’re most grateful for. How about this idea: make a short list of your favorite clothing and accessories you’re most grateful for? Then, the next time you’re feeling “off” be sure to refer to your list and see if your favorite things don’t cheer you up.

Here’s my short list, in honor of Maria von Trapp, and in honor of you:

  1. Hermes sterling and leather double hoop keychain – Always in my pocket with just the house keys attached, it was a gift from my beloved. It is gorgeous to behold, and holds the “key” to heart and home. No one sees this beautiful item, but I know it’s there. And that’s all that really matters. Security.
  2. Cashmere sweaters – The feeling of something cozy and soft makes me feel like I’m being cuddled in a blanket. Year round, I have several different weights to wear and am always able to enjoy this feeling like I’m giving myself a hug. Comfort.
  3. Graf & Lantz “man bag” – A gift I got to choose, I thought it’d be a bag that would get occasional use. But it’s turned out to be a defining signature that goes everywhere with me. Made of wool and leather, it keeps me prepared for anything, and is fun, too.
  4. Core collection of ties – I have a lot of ties, but am drawn repeatedly to a selection that conveys a “don’t f*** with me” attitude. Expose my inner power and confidence.
  5. Leather – Whether it’s jackets or shoes, I love good, butter-soft leather. It’s an investment, but is always a personal reward for hard work and success. Wearing one of my leather jackets is like enjoying one of the finer things in life. Indulge.

Looking back, it’s clear that Maria was the first image consultant I’d ever known. Through the guise of Julie Andrews, she taught me lessons I’d consider all my life: how to have confidence in me and to remember my favorite things. They are very much a part of everyday real life.

  1. Joseph, I loved this post! A lot of truth there.

My favorite item in my wardrobe is a Prada western belt I've had for about 4 years. It was very "out there" for me, beyond my fashion comfort zone (and definitely beyond my normal spending comfort zone!) but something about it called to me.

It makes me smile every time I wear it because it's so darn fun.

The next time I need to turn my frown upside down I'm wearing it!
