What Are You Famous For?

Way back in the beginning of my career, I received an award from my employer as part of its “You’re What We’re Famous For” recognition program.  I reveled in the award because, at age 20, I was so young to be working in such a high-end retail environment and struggled so much in that first year to find success.  I was what Neiman Marcus was famous for.  As I flew away from the retail nest and as my image consulting practice became more prominent, it became vital to be true to what I have become famous for.

You don’t have to have your name up in lights to be ‘famous.’  The people in your global circle of contacts, from intimate family members to clients, colleagues, and co-workers, friends, and people who have taught you along the way all know what you’re famous for.  Do you know what you’re famous for?  Is the way you see what you’re famous for consistent to how those connected to you perceive you?  You might be blown away when you find out.

Over the years I have become very interested in this idea of “What Are You Famous For?”  My clients say they want my insights into what makes them distinctive so they have more fulfilling lives.  Through the image development process these insights are revealed so clients identify with a “look” that distinguish them from everyone else.  Essentially, you can have a “look” that enhances what you are famous for.

But which qualities or strengths do you play up?  From where would you get this information?  And how could this information transcend the focus of image development and go deeper to be more insightful and transformational?

The best way to learn what you’re famous for is to survey a strong sample of people who know you well.  You should also evaluate yourself.  The collected, comparative results could be eye opening.  This is a great opportunity to get clear about how others perceive you versus how you see yourself.  What things about you might you take for granted but that others do not?  From this information you could plot a strategy to kick start the next phase of your life.

If you’re all ready successful and goal-oriented, you’ll want to know what you’re famous for.  Knowing this information will help prepare and position you for promoting your strengths.

If you’ve come off a successful career and find yourself in retirement, you’ll want to know what you’re famous for.  Just because you hung up your professional hat, you still want to be effective in dealing with your family and friends, and know how you could best serve your community or even create a retirement career.

If you’ve had success but lost your job, learning what you’re famous for can be a very helpful step in guiding you back to work.  This can invigorate your job search and help you think of new ways to exude your finest qualities.

And in all cases, this information can be used to help evolve or transform your personal image.

  1. I totally agree. I was frustrated with my Linked-In, Facebook, and corporate profile pictures. I needed to do something about it to elevate and establish my personal brand on the various social Web programs. My photo shoot was earlier this week, so I can’t wait to see how the proofs turn out!
