Luxury fashion is quite a complicated subject. The psychology of luxury fashion combines exclusivity and projecting how we think that wearing something luxurious will make us feel. But, don’t confuse fashion for style. The two are related, but not at all the same. Fashion is purely transactional, a commercial action. Style is how you make what you wear your own personal expression. “Doing something with style that differentiates you from everyone one else,” is how i described America’s richest businessman in the New York Times and in The Daily Mail. Even a pair of swim trunks can become a unique expression of your personal style.
Fashion requires an air of exclusivity in order for it to rise to the level of luxury. Luxury fashion excludes people on the bases of access, affordability, and even fit. Even as society grapples with inclusivity, a well-heeled contingent of the populace still desires whatever the masses will not have. To further confound the psychology of luxury fashion, some people who could never have designer clothes still covet them. That’s the socioeconomic bottom-up pressure. But, much of the socioeconomic pressure comes from the top of the class hierarchy.
Exclusive luxury fashion caters to those who could afford it. This is why you can’t walk into a big-box retailer and purchase high-end designer clothes. And although theoretically, anyone could walk into a high-end boutique or an upscale department store, many people feel shut out. So, they pass on by.
Personal Style Is More Than The Clothes You Wear
Luxury fashion is synonymous with high-end and couture brands and designers. When designers collaborate with big-box or fast-fashion retailers, people storm those stores, buying all the inventory in no time flat. Enough people who follow and covet fashionable clothes purchase co-branded labeled goods for the same reason others buy luxury fashion. They want to have something that others could not get their hands on. This suggests that a hierarchy exists within society about what makes something exclusive.
Consequently, it’s important to look beyond designer labels and create a unique personal style that shows your individuality. I explore this subject further in my FREE E-Book, “Be A More Prominent Leader.”
Another significant aspect of the psychology of luxury fashion is a pretty out-there idea. By wearing a highly desirable designer item or brand, the wearer assumes the properties associated with the item or brand. In this sense, exclusivity goes beyond merely looking stylish or fashionable. Such qualities linked with exclusivity all come down to raising one’s status in the eyes of others. When you wear a limited-edition brand designer handbag or designer logo sunglasses, you take on the qualities of those designers. At least this is the psychology behind it.
Given this rich context comprising the psychology of luxury fashion, it’s no wonder that people confuse designer clothes with style. My role as a fashion and personal style strategist connects the commerce of fashion with the personalization of style. But, as I shared at the beginning, they are not the same thing.
Making The Right Style Choices

The designer of this knit top is almost immaterial to the psychology of personal style. But, to the psychology of luxury fashion, that might be all that matters. The reason I chose this for a particular client had absolutely nothing to do with the designer. It all had to do with the distinctive coloration and pattern. My client’s personality perfectly matches what this knit top represents. In the end, that she can wear something to distinctively self-expressive is true luxury. It enhances her sense of confidence, ease, and offers her comfort. Who wouldn’t want to have more of that in their lives?
I do not treat luxury fashion as a gateway for a person to subsume heritage brands’ traits. Just because people can afford top quality, but do not value it, they won’t buy the goods.
Although we look to external sources for inspiration, people often don’t know how to interpret it for their personal style. This is why people have absolutely no idea what looks good on them.
Now, I do like to educate people about quality. So, I often introduce high-quality clothing and accessories to people with little to no previous exposure or experience. But, I do not think that wearing something of quality transfers a garment’s quality into a person’s spirit. A person must already have a desire for quality, just about other things. Then, wearing that quality item aligns with how much they care about quality, and it shows from the outside in. Quality clothes can only reinforce what’s already there, even if dormant.
I don’t find it attractive in others when I see designer brand labels and logos festooned all over their clothing. To me, that’s not style whatsoever. That’s purely the commerce of fashion. It is highly impersonal. If all you want is to show off your spending capability, you don’t need my high-minded personal style strategy services. However, if you want to look beyond designer labels and create a unique personal style visit my Experiences’ services. In short, will differentiate you with a unique personal style.
Causes and Effects of Feeling Comfortable in Clothes
People commonly associate luxury with the commerce of fashion. And I see this as the basic flaw with the psychology of luxury fashion. Just because someone can afford a luxury item does not even mean that they receive any pleasure by wearing it. Similarly, if someone is so uptight all the time, no piece of clothing can permanently transform that person’s anxiety. The reason why there are so many causes and effects of feeling comfortable in clothes is because what we really want is to feel comfortable in our own skin.
To me, personal style is true and pure luxury. When your personal style – the way you wear your fashion items – brings comfort and ease, it’s the height of luxury. It might not be totally necessary in life to achieve this. Life is full of choices and priorities. Still, if personal style is something you choose to indulge in, it surely can provide pleasure. The experience could provide tremendous satisfaction. And so, in the end, it has a lot less to do with what brands you wear. Or, how much you spend. And whether you have something that no one else has.
The only thing that you should have that no one else has is your unique sense of personal style.
The Secret Science Of Personal Style.
When it comes to the psychology of luxury fashion, I recommend gorgeous and distinctive clothes to visually tell your story. How you wear it matters. Who made it does not. It’s about who you are, and what you stand for. No one ever tires of that euphoric and happy feeling where what you wear matches your total spirit.
